Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is one of the most important and highly celebrated holidays in Chinese and Asian cultures around the world. Marking the beginning of the lunar calendar, this festival symbolizes renewal, hope and the start of a new cycle of life and prosperity. The festivities, which can last up to 15 days, are rich in tradition, ritual and symbolism, aimed at warding off evil spirits and attracting good luck, health and prosperity for the year ahead.
The origins of Chinese New Year
The origins of Chinese New Year go back thousands of years, and are rooted in various legends and traditions. One of the most popular stories is that of Nian, a ferocious monster who, according to legend, came out at the end of each year to devour the villagers. To keep him at bay, people began putting red lanterns outside their homes and setting off firecrackers, as Nian feared the loud noise and the color red. These customs evolved to become essential elements of Chinese New Year celebrations.
The Chinese Calendar and the Zodiac
The Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar, integrating both the phases of the moon and the solar cycle. It is associated with a zodiac of twelve animals, each year being placed under the sign of a specific animal, which recurs every twelve years. According to Chinese mythology, these animals were chosen by the Jade Emperor to be the guardians of time.

The Dragon is the fifth animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle and is considered the most powerful and fortunate of the twelve animals. In Chinese culture, the dragon is a symbol of strength, courage, luck, wisdom and nobility. It is often associated with the emperor and imperial power. Being born under the sign of the Dragon is considered very auspicious, as Dragons are said to be natural leaders, dynamic, ambitious and determined.
